UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE: A SEA OF OPPORTUNITIES IN PORTIMÃO

Abstract

This article aims at demonstrating how the underwater archaeological heritage can be the driver of cultural tourism in the city of Portimão, diversifying the tourist activities and acting as the cluster of underwater cultural tourism. The cultural tourism is one of the alternatives to complement the tourist offer to the visitors who have as primary motivation the sun and sea tourism. One of the most valuable cultural attractions in the county is the Portimão Museum, which preserves and promotes the local culture. It´s very important to highlight the museum underwater archaeological heritage center, which is responsible for the rescue, preservation and promotion of this heritage to the local population and visitors.
