Abstract

Given the strong role of the services sector in the economic development and the increasing participation of the tourism sector for expanding incomes and foreign exchange, it has become important to think about how the innovation process occurs in the tourist trade. Despite the fact that the term „innovation? is among the most researched themes in papers and related publications, there are few studies of innovation in services and especially in tourism. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the process of innovation in the tourism sector in order to understand some of its particularities and contribute to thinking about innovation management in tourism. To that end, we developed a case study of the Pestana Group, from Portugal. The paper is divided into an initial part about tourist activity, followed by a discussion on innovation and innovation in the services sector with a current characterization of the tourism sector, especially in Portugal. Finally, the group is presented and the results of the study. We conclude that is difficult to think about management innovation in tourism, but with innovation, tourism businesses gain competitiveness and give dynamics to the organizational behavior.
